Beautiful Bamboo and Cork Products from Bambu

“Bamboo is a highly renewable material. It is one of the earth’s fastest growing plants. Bamboo needs no replanting, grows without fertilizers or pesticides and is harvested from controlled stands with an astounding growth cycle of three to five years.

Bamboo truly is a remarkable renewable resource. It is a centuries old material that has been and continues to be used by over half the world’s population for applications as varied as food, shelter, fuel and clothing. These applications make bamboo a vital non-timber, non-petroleum resource. With a tensile strength superior to steel, it is one of the most versatile and durable natural resources in the world.

Cork is another remarkable renewable natural resource. The cork we use is sourced from the Qin Ling Mountains of Northern China. It is harvested sustainably every 10 to 12 years from the Cork Oak tree.

Cork provides a valuable source of income to thousands of people. The harvesting of cork does not harm the tree and the outer bark quickly regenerates and the tree continues to flourish, generally improving the trees health and vitality during its average 150-200 year lifespan. The tree plays a vital role in balancing an ecosystem. Cork forests are essential to preventing soil erosion, maintaining water resources and storing CO2. Contrary to common perception, cork is in abundant supply.”

Pinups for Pitbulls 2013 Calendar

“Pinups for Pitbulls, Inc. (PFPB) was founded in 2005 by Deirdre “Little Darling” Franklin. Deirdre was tired of finding that so-called rescues and shelters were euthanizing healthy, friendly, and adoptable animals due to their alleged “breed”, and so she utilized her background in modeling and education in fine arts to create a calendar like no other–eye-catching pinup girls and their pups, paying close attention to detail and era appropriate style along the way.

Since 2005, PFPB has continued its progress and has grown exponentially into the internationally recognized organization it is today. Deirdre’s initial vision and mission has remained intact, however her passion for animals and her ability to capture an audience has enabled PFPB to reach people across the world.

PFPB is a certified 501c3 not-for-profit organization whose mission is to educate people about the history, temperament, and plight of the pit bull-type dog; raising awareness to rally against Breed Specific Legislation (BSL) and Breed Discriminatory Laws (BDL). PFPB’s goal is to restore the image of the pit bull-type dog to its former reputation of America’s companion animal, war hero, and family member.

Through Deirdre’s ever-growing team of volunteers in over twenty states, PFPB has been able to host educational seminars, community outreach initiatives, and fund-raising events throughout the United States. In its educational crusade, PFPB hopes to end discrimination, abuse, and the unnecessary killing of pit bull-type dogs around the world–all the while dreaming that one day, PFPB will no longer be needed.”

Kevin Gillespie’s New Book, Fire In My Belly

Author and chef, Kevin Gillespie’s new book.

” Gillespie, the executive chef at Atlanta’s Woodfire Grill, makes an impressive cookbook debut with this inspired collection of more than 120 recipes, based on his restaurant creations but modified for the home cook. In a clever chapter entitled “Foods You Thought You Hated,” he arms himself with garlic, spices, and cream to make palatable dishes like brussels sprouts gratin and haggis with caramelized turnip. The chapter entitled “World Classics Revisited” offers famous mainstays like Welsh rarebit and coq au vin, as well as re-imagined treats like cucumber and almond gazpacho, and smoked trout puffs with bacon jam. He preaches the use of local and sustainable foods, but that does not mean he cannot own up to a chapter entitled “Junk Food,” with such entries as deep-fried candy bars. Gillespie’s intelligence and creativity (he turned down a scholarship to MIT in order to attend culinary school) is apparent in his writing style. Each chapter is prefaced with a brief, compelling tale from his past that is heartfelt without cloying. And each recipe is prefaced with commentary that is just off-color and honest enough to be quite funny (“I’ve always liked ramen noodles. I know they’re total crap, but I like them”).”

Gillespie emphasizes using local, seasonal ingredients

Gillespie hosted Stronger Together’s new video series Co+op. On the show celebrating the “International Year of Cooperatives,” Gillespie visited “food co-ops across the country—from grocery aisles to farm fields.” Of the experience, Gillespie tells Eater Atlanta:

“It was amazing to have an opportunity to travel this country and see the food systems of so many different communities. Seeing that no two co-ops are the same and that the offerings of every store completely reflect the wishes of their community was really inspiring.”

New Colors From Klean Kanteen and the Return of the Klean Kanteen Sippy Bottle!

The return of our most popular item from Klean Kanteen, the sippy Kanteen, with a new improved sippy top.

Kid Kanteen® Stainless Steel, BPA-Free Sippy Cup

“Every new parent wants to make sure their baby’s environment is as healthy as possible. Klean Kanteen® is proud to offer our own Sippy Spout-equipped Klean Kanteen. Every Kid Kanteen® Sippy comes with a polypropylene dust cover and handy attachment loop so it can be hooked on bag or stroller. Head off on your day’s adventure with safe hydration for your little people.

The bottle is made from 18/8, food-grade stainless steel that’s totally free of BPA and other toxins. Because stainless steel itself is safe, we don’t need to coat the inside of the bottle with a plastic or epoxy lining, which is one of the main differences between a stainless steel Klean Kanteen and aluminum bottles.

Food-grade stainless steel is used in the brewing, food and winemaking industries too. It’s the material of choice because it doesn’t retain or impart flavors. So apple juice tastes like apple juice, nothing more, nothing less. You can rest assured that your child’s sippy is totally safe and flavor-free. Our Sippy is designed for small hands too, so it’s easy to hold. And the large-mouth makes cleaning as simple as a quick scrub with soap and water or a trip through the dishwasher.”

The new Sport Cap on an all new line of colors from Klean Kanteen.

Kid Kanteen® Stainless Steel Sports Bottle

“It’s arguably most important for kids to stay hydrated and always drink from a healthy, non-toxic bottle. Small and lightweight, the 12oz Kid Kanteen® Sport is the natural progression for kids who are ready for a more grown-up delivery system than the Sippy Cap. The entire cap is BPA-free, super durable and the new soft silicone spout makes the Sport Cap 3.0 safe for new teeth. The cap’s relief valve has been redesigned to be classroom-friendly, no chirping or whistling! The 12oz size is great when space is limited, like for a lunchbox or backpack. It’s the perfect size for water, juice and other drinks.

Like every Klean Kanteen®, the 12oz bottle is made from high quality, 18/8, food-grade stainless steel that’s totally free of BPA and other toxins. Because stainless steel itself is safe, we don’t need to coat the inside of the bottle with a plastic or epoxy lining, which is one of the main differences between a stainless steel Klean Kanteen® and aluminum bottles. And it won’t leach toxins or flavors like plastic bottles.

No matter how many times you refill it, no matter what you put into it, your Kid Kanteen® will keep your child’s drinks fresh, crisp and clean tasting. The large-mouth design fits ice cubes and makes cleaning as simple as scrubbing it with soap and water or throwing it in the dishwasher. Yet the slim design fits into just about any cup holder, stroller, or car seat.”
